Self-guided walk in 2 hours

City Hall Square to Chrisitansborg
Start your tour at the Visitors Centre, 4A, Vesterbrogade, opposite the Tivoli Gardens. Continue down Vesterbrogade to the Town Hall Square.

Cross the square and proceed past the Lurblowers’ Column. Turn left and walk down Lavendelstræde and Stutterigade on to the Nytorv Square. Here, a raised platform marks the former location of a scaffold and public whipping ground. Public punishments were carried out as late as 1780.

Continue down Kompagnistræde and Læderstræde, two interconnected pedestrian streets also known as Strædet, until you reach Højbro Plads. Dominated by the statue of Bishop Absalon, Copenhagen’s founder, Højbro Plads is a beautiful square overlooking the Christianborg Palace, the Old Stock Exchange, and the inner city canals.

Strøget and the Royal Palace
Continue down Europe’s longest pedestrian mall Strøget to Kongens Nytorv, a 300-year-old square lined with stately mansions and also home to the Royal Theatre. Cross the square diagonally, and explore the picturesque port of Nyhavn.

Proceed down Bredgade, home to many art and antiques dealers, and continue straight ahead to the impressive Marble Church and the Russian Orthodox Church with its golden onion domes. Turn right and enter the square enclosed by the Amalienborg Palace, residence of the Royal Family. From here, you get excellent views across the harbour to the new Opera House.

The tour is continued.
